R - K
R and K selection Is a measurement used to classify animals reproductive stratagies. K is when a single offspring is born, whereas R is many offspring are produced.
K
The Eurasian Lynx produces a maximum of 3 offspring during the months of February/March. The kittens are born totally blind, after a 2 month gestation period, but at 6 weeks of age they have the ability to eat and leave the den in which the hey were born. These kittens become fully independent at 15 months of age.
K / R
The Snow Flea/Springtail lay approximately 20 eggs at a time on themselves and then roll around in the ground to disperse them. Because they are scattered everywhere this gives them a higher chance of survival.
R
After much research, I have not been able to find an R reproductive organism in the Alpine Biome. I believe this is because the conditions are too difficult for animals to produce multiple offspring. This may be because too much pressure would be placed on the host, the mother or it doesn't increase the chances survival amongst young animals so they just produce enough to maintain their species.
