The central eastern alps, also know as the Austrian Alps stretch from the heart of Austria down trough Switzerland, Italy, Lichtenstein, France and end in the east in Slovenia. This Alpine Biome is the largest in Europe and one of the greatest mountain range systems in the world. The highest peak of these alps is Mount Blanc (blanc meaning white in French) which stands at 4808 metres above sea level.
Now for some information about the general Alpine Biome;
The word Alpine comes from the Latin word 'Alpes' which means high mountains. This shows that the Alpine Biome is one of great height and is made from high mountain ranges, typically at an altitude of 3,000 metres or more above sea level and just short the snow line. Alpine biomes can be classified in multiple ways. Firstly their temperature ranges from from 5 - 15 degrees in Summer, lasting from June to September and almost always bellow freezing in the winter months, lasting from October to May. Temperature can also be calculated buy using this simple key, for every 1000 metres in altitude gained, the temperature will decrease by 10 degrees.
The normal climate for the Alpine Biome is low temperatures, icy, windy and snowy. The average rainfall level is only approximately 12 inches per year, which indicates that this is really quite a dry biome.
This biome only occupies 16% of the earths surface, and distribution is effected by the following things, altitude, latitude , and rainfall. As mentioned before, alpine biomes are only found at extremely high altitudes, found at a north latitude and receive low amounts of rainfall.
